Does ozone inactivate the new coronavirus?

[New pneumonia] Ozone can inactivate the new coronavirus and can be used for disinfection

Professor Yano Shouichi of Microbial Infectious Diseases, Nara Medical University, Japan, Director of Infectious Diseases Center Kasawara Kei, and Japan MBT Alliance (Members of Infectious Diseases Committee: QOL Company, Sanyou Shoji Company, Tamura Teco Company) formed a research team for the first time in the world Confirmed that exposure to ozone gas can inactivate the new coronavirus. In addition, the inactivation conditions were clarified through experiments, which proved its practicality from a scientific point of view.

In order to prevent the spread of infection, it is laborious and time-consuming to wipe alcohol, etc. after use in consultation rooms and conference rooms. As one of the means to solve this problem, there are opinions that use ozone gas for sterilization, but there is no relevant medical evidence before.

This time, a research team led by Nara Prefectural Medical University conducted an experiment to inactivate the new coronavirus by exposure to ozone gas, confirming that ozone can inactivate the new coronavirus, and also proved the ozone concentration and exposure time through experiments The relationship between other conditions and ozone inactivation.

Experiment content

The research team cultivated a new type of coronavirus cell line, set the stainless steel plate in an ozone-resistant airtight box (made of propylene) installed in a safety cabinet, and coated the new type of coronavirus as the experimental object. Then run the ozone generator (medical equipment certified by PMDA) installed in the ozone-resistant airtight box (made of propylene) to control the ozone concentration in the ozone-resistant airtight box to around 1.0~6.0ppm.

The amount of ozone exposure is set by the CT value (using the CT value of 330 for the medical device certification verification experiment of the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare of Japan, and the CT value of 60 for ozone disinfection by the fire department of the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications). After exposure, the cells are inoculated with the virus, to determine whether the virus has infected the cells, and to calculate the amount of virus.

Experimental results show that when the CT value is 330 (under 6ppm ozone concentration, exposure for 55 minutes), the survival rate of the virus is 1/1,000~1/10,000, and the CT value is 60 (under 1ppm ozone concentration, exposure for 60 minutes) At this time, the survival rate of the virus is 1/10~1/100.

to sum up

Through this study, it is confirmed that the use of ozone can reduce the virus survival rate to as low as 1/10,000. This shows that ozone can inactivate the new coronavirus under practical conditions.
